The Journey Is Often a Battle of the Mind

Some days, we feel like we’ve let ourselves down. We zoom in on the one thing we’re struggling with and forget to zoom out and see the bigger picture. For many of us, that “one thing” is movement. It’s the habit we want to build, the routine we know supports our health, yet it’s the hurdle that feels the hardest to clear consistently.

But here’s the truth: better, not perfect.

When we slow down and look at the whole landscape of our lives, we often realize—we’re doing far more right than we give ourselves credit for.

You might notice that you’re already making better choices in small but meaningful ways. Maybe it’s choosing to learn something new about your health. Maybe it’s stepping away from a screen and giving your mind a break. Maybe it’s reaching for water instead of another sugary drink. Maybe it’s adding a little more fibre to your meals, or choosing a snack that supports your energy instead of drains it. Maybe it’s simply pausing long enough to ask, “What do I actually need right now?”

Better choices show up in everyday moments:

  • pausing before eating and checking in with your body

  • drinking water throughout the day

  • taking vitamins or supplements that support your goals

  • getting to bed on time and waking with a natural rhythm

  • creating space for meditation, prayer, or reflection

  • starting your morning with intention

  • nurturing healthy relationships and supportive environments

  • choosing rest when your body asks for it

  • choosing honesty when your mind feels overwhelmed

These small shifts matter. They’re signs that you’re paying attention, that you’re choosing better—even when life feels heavy, even when motivation dips, even when movement isn’t where you want it to be yet.

They’re proof that you’re already on the way.

These are not small things. These are foundational habits that many people struggle to build. You’ve already laid the groundwork for a healthy, intentional life.

And still—movement feels hard.

Life Is a Journey, Not a Straight Line

It’s impossible to talk about health without acknowledging the emotional weight we carry. Caring for an aging parent can be heavy. Holding the reality of time, change, and loss is heavy. Navigating responsibilities, relationships, and the quiet moments of worry in between—also heavy.

You can’t fix these things. You can’t change them. But you can acknowledge that they shape your energy, your capacity, your motivation.

You’re in a season of life where you want to be strong, happy, and purposeful. That desire matters. It’s guiding you, even on the days you feel stuck.

Movement in the Summer: Why Is It Still Hard?

We tell ourselves, “It’s nice out. I should be walking.”   But movement isn’t just about weather—it’s about mental load, emotional bandwidth, and the stories we tell ourselves.

You remember when you used to work out. You remember the community, the energy, the encouragement. You also remember the cost, and the fear of starting over, of feeling “out of shape,” of being back at the beginning.

But beginnings aren’t failures. Beginnings are invitations.

And as I have shared many times: Choose your hard.

Not as pressure. As empowerment.

Living in pain is hard. Living overweight is hard. Making better choices is hard. Choosing to move is hard.

Choose your hard.

“The journey is often a battle of the mind. Comparison is the thief of joy.”

And it’s true.

Movement doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be intense. It doesn’t have to look like it used to.

It just has to be today.

Do today. Do what you can. Then we start again tomorrow. Over time, the resets become further apart. The restarts become less dramatic. The consistency becomes more natural.

You’re Doing the Work—Even When It Doesn’t Feel Like It

Processing your feelings is work. Naming your struggles is work. Reflecting on your habits is work. Choosing not to quit is work.

You are committing to the process even when it’s not perfect. You are showing up for yourself in ways that matter deeply. You are building a life that supports your health from the inside out.

Stick with it. The alternative is quitting—and quitting gets us nowhere.

You’re doing the hard work, one day at a time. Keep going.
